Call

When is it an emergency?

  • Severe, throbbing, suddenly occurring toothache
  • Swelling in the face or jaw with or without pus discharge
  • Broken, loosened or knocked-out tooth
  • Bleeding in the mouth that won’t stop
  • Severe post-bleeding after dental surgery or wisdom tooth removal
  • Restricted mouth opening (lockjaw)

When dental accidents are correctly identified and treated promptly, there is often the possibility of preserving the tooth even in severe injuries. Especially in children, such accidents can have significant long-term consequences for teeth. Therefore, it is crucial to be informed about the correct behavior after a dental accident.

How to act correctly in an emergency

  1. For bleeding press a clean cloth on the affected area to stop the bleeding
  2. For broken teeth and tooth fragments store the broken pieces in a Dentosafe box, in cold milk or in saliva.
  3. A completely knocked-out front tooth touch only at the crown and store in a Dentosafe box, in cold milk or in saliva.
  4. For an exposed tooth root do not touch the affected area and rinse the crack briefly under running water
  5. Call us immediately – we will try to offer you an appointment on the same day.

What we need to know

  • What happened?
  • When did the accident occur?
  • What type of emergency is it? Displaced or knocked-out teeth, inflammation?
  • Are there other injuries to the lip, tongue or mouth?
  • How old is the affected person?
  • For children: Are these baby or permanent teeth?
  • Are there any allergies (e.g. to antibiotics or local anesthetics)?

Emergency procedure at the practice

On-site examination

We carefully examine the affected area – depending on the situation with visual examination, percussion or cold test, and if necessary a digital X-ray. The goal is to identify the cause of your complaints as precisely as possible.

Initial emergency care

Depending on the type of emergency, we can already begin with the actual therapy – e.g.:

  • Cleaning and treatment of inflamed tooth roots (emergency root canal treatment)
  • Treatment of broken teeth with provisional build-ups
  • Repositioning and splinting of loose or knocked-out teeth
  • Hemostasis and wound care after accidents or operations
Planning follow-up treatment

After initial care, we discuss the next steps together with you. If further treatments are necessary, we plan them individually – always transparently and calmly.
